The people that work and volunteer here really bring history to life. It is very educational
Enjoyed seeing the old fort. Sinage to tell a little about rooms and what they were used for wish their was more posted about the actual history.
Neat historic site but a lot of it is blocked off due to lack of maintenance. Its sad to see how the structure has deteriorated over the last 30 years.
We visited in late January and were the only ones there. Got lots of attention from the ladies in the museum. haha We really enjoyed seeing the old reconstructed fort and the "newer" stone buildings. The history was really compelling and you could almost imagine what it would have been like back then.
A very interesting place. Must stop in and tour. Self guided tours so you can take your time. They still bake bread in their amazing bakery on certain days. There is a gift shop. Family friendly and just a lot of history.
Nice fort to visit in eastern part of Oklahoma. It has multiple areas to visit. Main fort area that has parking, which extends with a few more buildings and a couple chimneys. Further up the road about 1 mile is the museum with a few more buildings including the first school for the blind of OK, a bakery and a building in ruins. A few miles more and you get to the dam too! Worth the stop!
If you're into frontier historical forts this should be pinned on your map. The Fort has two distinct sections. The lower quadrangle has the main post with the barracks, brig, Commander's quarters, etc. The upper section has a five or so original stone buildings. Enough displays to keep you engaged, but not so many to as to be overwhelming. Various artifacts to see on the grounds as well. The Fort supports various events throughout the year so check out the website for more info. I also enjoyed the old downtown Ft Gibson, the former road bridge (next to train trestle off wooden fort) and the National Cemetery.
I love history!!! There is so much more that can be done to showcase Fort Gibson as the oldest town in the state of Oklahoma. I think it is a lot of missed opportunities. There were no activities going on in the old fort. But, it was incredible to see it still standing!!! The bridge was also a highlight.
